Note to self #19: Celebrate small wins.

They were only made possible because of you.

Hi👋🏽 I’m Kat. I help navigate difficult conversations and teach women how to negotiate on their own terms. Welcome to my version of a newsletter where I’ll be reminding you how to be kinder to yourself. You may listen (above) or read (below). You’re doing great, sweetie. Remember you’re all you have. So welcome and thanks for being here.✨

Last week felt like I was operating at full capacity. And the interesting thing is that I was technically on “vacation.” Don’t you ever feel both physically drained and yet empowered at the same time when you are able to push yourself towards a purpose bigger than yourself? Sometimes we forget to acknowledge the power and the resiliency of our bodies and its capacity to be able to exert beyond the stress and pressure. And yet here we are everyday, performing little miracles. And while I have not been putting my well-being in a position of extreme burnout (burnout is sooo pre-COVID), I must admit that I am in awe of my body every single day. If you think about it despite everything we put our bodies through, this vessel, instrument or tool that takes us throughout our life journey, still has the power to carry us even when we’re struggling to push forward.

Sometimes we take our capacities for granted because we expect us to do more, to be more, or to produce more. But the truth is we don’t need to do more. We are already doing enough. As in, we are doing enough based on our current circumstance. Our capacity today will not look the same as the day before or similar to this time last year. Our capabilities at any given moment will vary because no two days will ever be the same and neither will we.

So we need to take this moment to celebrate our small victories. No matter how insignificant they may seem. We are so hard on ourselves that we obsess over making errors or mistakes that we made (Or is that just me?). We’re so focused on ruminating over things that are going wrong for us (at least in our head) instead of appreciating the things that are going right.

Whatever it is you are obsessive about these days: whether you were unable to complete something, maybe did too much, forgot one thing, made a mistake or fail to start something - it’s time to let that go. Take a step back and see how that fits the overall big picture. If you need to, take a few more steps backward. And more. And maybe a few more. Keep at it until you’ll be able to see everything that you have done. Witness all the efforts, the beauty and magic that you created throughout the past years of your life until this moment. Because in the grand scheme of things, both big and small accomplishments, all serve the same purpose. So whatever feat you have achieved, however miniscule, don’t brush it off as irrelevant. Be grateful for the part it plays in that bigger picture.

Appreciate your efforts in any given moment. And don’t compare your present-day self with any version of you. And especially don’t compare yourself with anyone else’s version of themselves. It’s not fair to you. Celebrate everything that you’ve done and continue to believe that you can always try again tomorrow. So reward yourself not just for the big wins but the little wins too. In the end, you’ll see, that your biggest accomplishments were made up of those everyday seemingly trivial wins - so don’t take that for granted.

So tell me friends: what are you celebrating this week?

Kat✨
